Santorini Implements New Tourism Safety Measures Ahead of the 2025 Season

Greek authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to visitor safety and sustainable tourism management in Santorini. Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni announced that the Old Port (Paleo Limani) will be closed for 2-3 months for critical safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements.

This decision, coupled with broader tourism management strategies, means that all cruise ship passengers will now disembark at Athinios Port, the island’s primary commercial harbor.

Why Is Santorini’s Old Port Closing?

The closure of the Old Port is a preventive safety measure aimed at ensuring a safer, smoother experience for tourists.

Key Reasons for the Closure

  • Infrastructure Maintenance: The Old Port requires essential upgrades to accommodate future tourism growth.
  • Safety Concerns: The region has experienced seismic activity, prompting precautionary measures to reduce overcrowding and prevent landslide risks.
  • Overcrowding Solutions: Authorities are shifting cruise operations to Athinios Port to improve arrival efficiency and reduce congestion in Fira.

How Will This Affect Cruise Ship Passengers?

️ 1. New Disembarkation at Athinios Port

  • All cruise ships will now dock at Athinios Port instead of the Old Port.
  • This eliminates the need for tender boats, significantly reducing delays.

2. Alternative Transportation Options

  • Direct Pick-Up from Athinios (If Permitted by Authorities)
    • If approved, our team will meet you directly at Athinios for private transfers and private tours.
    • This bypasses the need for additional transportation in Fira.
  • Bus Transfers to Fira (If Required)
    • If direct pick-up isn’t allowed, passengers will take organized buses to Fira, where our team will meet you.
    • This ensures a smooth transition to guided tours or individual plans.

⏳ 3. Less Waiting, More Time to Explore

  • No More Long Queues at the Cable Car (previously up to 45 minutes!).
  • Faster Access to Santorini’s Top Destinations with organized transfers.
  • Improved Sustainability Measures by preventing over-tourism in sensitive areas.

⚠️ Potential New Restriction: Pools in the Caldera May Be Banned

Although not yet confirmed, sources suggest that authorities are considering new regulations that may prohibit private pools in the Caldera area.

This speculation is based on concerns regarding:

  • Water conservation: The high water consumption of pools in a dry island environment.
  • Structural integrity: Ensuring that the Caldera cliffs are not weakened by excessive development.
  • Environmental impact: Authorities are pushing for more sustainable tourism practices.

This is not yet official, but discussions are reportedly underway. We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
